Temporal Authority: When Freshness Matters for AI Visibility

Freshness matters differently by topic and query. SiteNexis uses Temporal Authority to analyze maintenance, drift, and the recency of time-sensitive claims.

Backlinks can remain useful while the information they support changes at different rates. SiteNexis uses Temporal Authority as a framework for analyzing whether a site's evidence is being maintained and whether time-sensitive claims remain current. This is a diagnostic model, not a universal provider outcome.

How AI Systems Model Temporal Trust

Google documents freshness systems for queries where newer information is expected, and recommends accurate publication and modification dates. SiteNexis extends that evidence into a Temporal Authority diagnostic that considers freshness, update patterns, and claim recency. The model should not be read as a universal temporal boost or penalty used by every AI provider.

The Four Temporal Risk Zones

  • Actively maintained (updated within 30 days): maximum temporal trust, decay penalty zero
  • Periodically maintained (updated within 3 months): moderate temporal trust, small decay penalty
  • Stale (last updated 3–12 months ago): reduced temporal trust, growing decay penalty
  • Abandoned (last updated over 12 months ago): significant temporal decay, particularly severe for time-sensitive content types

◆Keep dateModified accurate when substantive changes are made. A date field helps systems interpret recency, but it is not a guarantee of visibility; do not change it without a genuine content update.

Time-Sensitive Claims in Evergreen Content

Time-sensitive pages—such as pricing, statistics, and competitive comparisons—deserve review on a cadence appropriate to how quickly their facts change. An older page is not automatically unreliable, and no universal update interval guarantees citation or visibility. Review dates, claims, and sources together.

Authority Velocity as a Growth Metric

Authority velocity is a SiteNexis comparison across successive audit snapshots. It can help teams see whether evidence and maintenance signals are improving or drifting; it does not prove that a provider will reward or penalize a domain.
