Topical Authority for AI Retrieval: A SiteNexis Framework

Topical authority is not about publishing volume. For AI retrieval, it is about cluster coherence, entity depth, and cross-page semantic consistency.

The SEO industry has long used "topical authority" to mean publishing extensively on a subject. SiteNexis uses the term more narrowly as an analytical frame for evaluating topic coherence, entity clarity, semantic coverage, and the relationships among related pages. Google and other providers do not publish one universal topical-authority score or formula, so this framework should guide investigation rather than be treated as a provider rule.

The Semantic Cluster Model

SiteNexis models a semantic cluster as content nodes that share a primary entity, address related subtopics, and reference one another through explicit connections. A cluster can include a hub entity, focused subtopic pages, and descriptive internal links. This is a SiteNexis model for auditing structure; it is not a claim that every provider exposes or applies the same graph.

Measuring Cluster Coherence

  • Entity coverage: does every page in the cluster mention the primary entity explicitly, using its canonical name?
  • Subtopic distinctiveness: does each page address a genuinely distinct aspect of the primary topic, or do pages overlap?
  • Internal link density: does each page link to at least two related pages with descriptive anchor text?
  • Schema consistency: does every page's schema data use the same entity name, type, and core attributes?
  • External citation support: does at least one page in each cluster have a sameAs link to an authoritative external source?

●Map your content clusters visually. List every page and draw a line between pages that link to each other. If the structure is only hub-and-spoke, consider whether related pages should also link directly. SiteNexis treats descriptive relationships as a useful diagnostic; provider-specific effects should be tested rather than assumed.

Depth Over Breadth

A practical SiteNexis hypothesis is that a focused topic covered with depth and specificity, connected by coherent internal linking, can be easier to evaluate than a collection of generic pages. This is a testable strategy, not a guaranteed citation or recommendation effect. Measure outcomes against a defined query set and business goal rather than relying on an assumed traffic or lead ratio.

Building Authority Without Publishing Volume

A small, coherent cluster with genuine depth may be more useful than a large set of overlapping pages, but no universal page count establishes authority. Start with an entity definition page, build outward to important questions, and connect related evidence with descriptive links. Review coverage and retrieval observations over time.
