Why Google AI Overviews Ignore Your Best Content (And How to Fix It)
AI Overviews have their own inclusion logic separate from organic rankings. Here is what drives inclusion and what blocks it.
Google AI Overviews may use different models and techniques from the systems that produce classic organic results. Google does not publish a complete inclusion formula, so a page can appear in organic results without appearing in an Overview, and an Overview link is an observation rather than proof of a ranking or retrieval rule. This article presents practical diagnostic hypotheses for investigating that gap.
What AI Overviews Are Actually Extracting
AI Overviews can synthesise answers from multiple retrieved sources. Direct, well-supported passages may be easier for a system to use, but Google has not published a rule that systematically deprioritises qualified or long-form analysis. Treat passage structure as an inspection hypothesis and test it against observed queries rather than assuming a provider preference.
The Six Inclusion Blockers
- noindex directive on key pages — AI Overviews respect crawl directives; verify no accidental noindex on informational pages
- Missing or invalid schema markup — structured data should accurately describe visible content, but Google does not state that a particular schema type guarantees AI Overview inclusion
- Indirect answer structure — leading with context before the answer; AI extraction prefers answer-first formatting
- Entity inconsistency — the page's primary entity is described differently than in your schema or other pages
- Low factual density — inspect whether important claims are specific and supportable; there is no universal claims-per-word threshold
- Thin E-E-A-T signals — no author attribution, no organisation schema, no external author citations or credentials
▲Check your top-traffic pages for the noindex tag. It is surprisingly common for CMS platform updates to accidentally add noindex to entire content categories. A single misconfigured meta robots tag can exclude hundreds of high-quality pages from AI Overview consideration.
The FAQ Schema Advantage
An FAQ section can make genuine user questions and answers easier to inspect, but it is not a required AI Overview mechanism. Add questions only when they improve the page for readers, and use FAQPage markup only when it accurately represents visible content. Do not add a fixed number of questions or imply that the markup guarantees inclusion.
Measuring Your AI Overview Inclusion Rate
Use Google Search Console to identify queries where your content appears in organic results, then record whether an AI Overview and supporting links were shown for the same observation. Compare cited and uncited pages as a hypothesis exercise; differences in answer structure, schema alignment, factual specificity, or entity clarity do not by themselves prove causation. A defined sample over multiple dates is more informative than a single query check.
